COMMUNITY CALENDAR for the week of

The Waverly Community House, 1115 North Abington Road, Waverly, announces the return of "Comm Ball", a free open gym with basketball on Friday evenings. The dates are September 10, October 1, 8, and 22. Family Open Gym will take place from 6 to 8 PM on those evenings. Children under the age of 12 must be supervised. From 8 to 10 PM, the gym will be available for players age 16 and older.

The Justus Volunteer Fire Company is holding a wine tasting fundraiser on Friday, September 10 from 7 to 10 PM at the Maiolatesi Wine Cellars, 210 Green Grove Road, Scott Township. Chris Gratz will entertain you and dinner includes grilled chicken, penne with vodka sauce, pulled pork sandwiches, hamburgers, salads, corn on the cob, a chocolate fountain, and two glasses of wine. The Felittese Association of Old Forge invites you to its annual festival on September 10, 11, and 12 at 146 Third Street in Old Forge. The festival begins with a parade on Friday at 6 PM. The grounds open at 5 PM and the Cadillacs will entertain you starting at 6:30. On Saturday, September 11, Gold Dust will entertain you. Sunday, September 12, is the feast day of Our Lady of Constantinople and a Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM at Prince of Peace Church, 127 West Grace Street, Old Forge. The grounds open at noon and the Poets will entertain you at 6:30. There will be plenty of Italian specialties as well, including porketta, tripe, and tiramisu.

Catholic Underground PA will present the DeSouza Family Singers at Annunciation Parish at St. Gabriel's Church in Hazleton on Friday, September 10 at 7 PM. Come for a time of Heavenly Adoration of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and a diverse collection of songs from around the world in the Underground Coffeehouse. The Valley View Gun Club Top Guns 5th Annual Poker Run will take place on Saturday, September 11, with registration starting at 11 AM. All vehicles are welcome and this event will be held rain or shine. Register early to receive a free t-shirt. The $25 fee includes a poker hand, pig roast, and all-day entertainment. On Saturday, September 11 at 7 PM, Lacawac Sanctuary in Lake Ariel will host the Young Geezers, Tony, Rap, and Dan--three good friends who blend acoustic instruments with three-part harmonies. Old enough to qualify as "geezers" but too young to be willing to admit it, the trio hails from our area. Their repertoire includes a mix of folk, bluegrass, gospel, blues, Texas swing, and even the occasional sea chantey. A donation of $8, $5 for Sanctuary members, is requested to help support the Sanctuary's programs and historic buildings. There is no charge for children under 12 years of age. There will be a Variety Sale on Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12 from 8 AM to 7 PM both days at St. Mary's Convent, 527 Lawrence Street, Old Forge. There will be furniture, linens, books, household items, vintage items, appliances, keepsakes, memorabilia, and more, all filling 21 rooms on 4 floors. The Nicholson Women's Club invites you to Nicholson Bridge Day on Sunday, September 12 from 9 AM to 4 PM on Main Street, Routes 11 and 92 in Nicholson. There will be many vendors with crafts, collectables, and food, as well as live entertainment. The day starts with our national anthem and a salute to the flag at 9 AM, followed by a pet show at 9:30. There's a chicken barbecue starting at 11 AM, the Wyoming County Players at 1 PM, the T-Town Twirlers at 2 PM, as well as a town walk featuring local architecture at 2 PM. The 28th Annual Irish Festival will be held on Sunday, September 12 at the St. Francis Xavier Church grounds in Friendsville. There will be a Mass at 11 AM, with the festival running from noon to 7 PM. The festival features the Irish Lads and Old Friends. Admission is $6 and the festival will be held rain or shine.

The Catholic Community of Northeast Wilkes-Barre will hold a spaghetti and meatball dinner on Sunday, September 19 at St. Stanislaus Church Hall, 666 North Main Street, from 11:30 AM to 4 PM. Take-outs are available. Tickets cost $8 and include spaghetti with meatballs, salad, bread and butter, a choice of homemade dessert, and coffee or tea. For tickets, please call 823-4988.

A Spiritual Formation Weekend will be held at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 317 Luzerne Avenue, West Pittston on Friday, September 24 at 7:30 PM for church leaders and on Saturday, September 25 beginning at 9 AM for interested believers. The theme is "Personal Renewal: Four Emblems of the Holy Spirit" and it will be led by Rev. David Janssen, lead pastor of the State College Alliance Church. The weekend will conclude with a healing service at 2 PM. To register, please call the church office at 654-2500.

There will be a ziti and meatball dinner to benefit Debbie Calabrese Masko, a Blakely resident who is battling throat cancer. The dinner will be served on Sunday, October 3 from 2 to 8 PM at VFW Post 7963, 284 Main Street in Eynon. Beer will also be available and there will be prizes and fundraising activities. Tickets cost $10 and are available at the door or you may order them by calling 876-1996.

Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 1309 West Locust Street, Scranton, will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Sunday, October 17. Bishop Joseph Bambera will celebrate Mass at 4 PM. All are welcome. There will be a dinner at St. Mary's Center, 320 Mifflin Avenue, Scranton that Sunday at 6 PM. Tickets for the dinner are available at weekend Masses, Saturdays before and after the 4 PM Mass and on Sundays before and after the 11 AM Mass.
